Herman Lake Trailhead to Herman Lake, October 20, 2002

The Herman Lake Trailhead is located at the northeast corner of Exit 218 from I-70, elevation 10,149. Today I was hiking with Dave Johnston, who I met on my Blue Lake hike, and his friend Howard Roerig. We hiked to Herman Lake. It is uphill every step of the way, with a total elevation gain of 1600 feet over 3.5 miles.

Yours truly about 200 yards from the trailhead.
Early scenery.
Gaining altitude quickly.
Brazen beggar bird.
Sweet...
We went left to Herman Lake. On the return trip I took a short walk to an unnamed saddle via the Jones Pass South trail.
Almost there, Dave. (Dave is 69 years old!)
The lake is just over this rise.
Herman Lake. Beginning to freeze.
Yours truly at Herman Lake.
Another view of Herman Lake and the surrounding rock.
Ice on the shore of Herman Lake.
Yours truly at Herman Lake. It is cold. The sun finally broke through the clouds as we left the lake.
Small marsh/ponds below Herman Lake.
A short side trip on the Jones Pass South trail.
The view from an unnamed saddle on the Jones Pass South trail.
Looking back towards the Herman Lake area from the unnamed saddle on the Jones Pass South trail.
The lure of the trail...
Heading home.
