This was my first survival walk with Christopher. Also attending this walk were Dude McLean and Leslee Komaiko. I was looking forward to meeting Dude, as I had corresponded with him on a number of occasions through the Hoods Woods survival forum. Leslee is a freelance writer: her article about our walk appeared in the May 13, 2000 issue of the L.A. Times. We started our walk at the west end of Altadena Blvd. near the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. Christopher identified, discussed, and collected plants as we headed up the Arroyo Seco. Along the way we made soap and rope with yucca and tried our hand at constructing a net. When we got to Gould Mesa Campground we had a delicious salad from the greens which Christopher had collected. We then made fire with a hand drill before heading back to the cars. It was a wonderful day spent with wonderful people. | |
